Alabama Cooperative Extension System to offer muscadine/grape and wine production workshop

On Friday, February 22nd the Alabama Cooperative Extension System will teach an educational muscadine/grape and wine production workshop. This meeting will begin at the Nunn-Winston House at Kiesel Park at 8:45 a.m. and will conclude at Whippoorwill Vineyard at 3:00 p.m.

Topics that will be discusses include Muscadine Cultivars, Pierces Disease Resistant Bunch Grape Cultivars, Seedless Table Grape Cultivars, Pierces Disease Resistant Vinifera selections, Planting, Trellising, Training, Pruning Muscadines, and the Basics of Wine Making.

The tour will end with a tour of Whippoorwill Vineyards in Notasulga. To sign-up or for more information, contact the Lee County Extension office at (334) 749-3353.

Football pairings set for 2013 Champions Challenge

Football pairings set for 2013 Champions Challenge

Six teams have been selected for the eighth annual AHSAA Champions Challenge preseason football classic at Montgomery’s Cramton Bowl Aug. 23-24.

Walker High School will face Benjamin Russell on Friday night, Aug. 23 in the first of three games, according Alvin Briggs, Director of the Alabama High School Athletic Directors & Coaches Association. The AHSADCA hosts the event each year.

On Saturday, the two remaining games will be played beginning at 5 p.m. with the Walter Wellborn and Straughn squaring off in the small-school game. Class 6A teams Enterprise and Bob Jones will meet in the final game at 7:30 p.m.

Wellborn coach Jeff Smith said his team is excited to be a part of the Champions Challenge.
“When I told our kids we had been selected, they really let out  loud cheer,” he said. “This  gives our kids a chance to play in a championship game-like atmosphere against a quality opponent on a big stage.

State to auction surplus property Wednesday

MONTGOMERY— Bargain hunters will have an opportunity to find a deal on vehicles, computers, office supplies and many other items at the state of Alabama surplus property auction on Wednesday.

The Surplus Property Division of the Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs is hosting the auction at its warehouse at 4590 Mobile Highway in Montgomery. The auction begins at 8 a.m. and continues until the last item is sold.

In addition to property no longer needed by state and federal agencies, ADECA acquires abandoned items from several airports in the Southeast.

To bid on the available items, you will need a photo ID and social security number or federal employee ID. Items will be available for on-site inspection from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. today and Tuesday.

AUM kicks off Homecoming Week 2013

Homecoming Week kicked off at Auburn University at Montgomery on Monday. The community is invited to come cheer on the Warhawks at their Homecoming doubleheader against the University of Mobile on Saturday, Feb. 16, in the Athletic Complex. The women’s basketball team will tip off at 2 p.m., followed by the men’s team at 4 p.m. Homecoming festivities – including the crowning of homecoming king and queen – will take place between the two games.

1. Jordan Foster, a junior majoring in speech pathology and audiology from Colquitt, GA
2. Kellye Pickette, a senior majoring in mass communications from Daphne, AL
3. MarNicka Smith, a senior majoring in psychology from Minneapolis, MN

1. Justin Law, a senior majoring in information systems from Titus, AL
