Odom named ABCA All-American; pitchers Lawler and Brown named All-Region

The accolades continue for the Huntingdon baseball team.

Coming off a second straight 30-win season and the program’s first appearance in a NCAA Regional, three Hawks were recently recognized by the American Baseball Coaches Association. Junior catcher Joseph Odom was named second-team All-American and joined pitchers Neil Lawler and Craig Brown on the ABCA All-South Region teams.

Odom was named first-team All-South, Lawler was second-team All-South and Brown was third-team All-South.

“All of these guys are deserving of the accolades they’ve received and each of them played a key role in our success this season,” Huntingdon head coach D.J. Conville said. “To be recognized with All-American and All-Region honors, it shows the kind of season that Odom turned in. He’s worked hard to achieve what he has.

“Neil and Craig both had strong years and I’m tickled to see them recognized on the All-Region teams.

Huntingdon baseball earns 30th win of the season

The Huntingdon baseball team scored four runs in the first three innings and got by LaGrange 4-3 on Saturday.

The win was the 30th of the season for the Hawks (30-9), marking the second straight 30-win season for Huntingdon. It was the second win over LaGrange (22-23) in a three-game series. Huntingdon won the first game 6-5 in 10 innings on Friday night. The two teams will wrap up their series on Sunday at 1 p.m.

Keegan Lambeth, Grant Brown and Trey Smith combined for seven of the Hawks’ 10 hits on Saturday. Lambeth was 3-for-4 with a run scored, Smith was 2-for-4 with two RBIs, a run and two stolen bases and Brown was 2-for-4 with a run.

Joseph Odom singled to drive in Brown for the first run of the game and Smith drew a bases-loaded walk to score Caleb Astin and give the Hawks a 2-0 lead in the first inning.

Hawks rally in bottom of 10th for win over Point University

The Huntingdon baseball team rallied to beat Point University 8-7 in 10 innings on Wednesday night.

It was the Hawks’ 14th straight win at Posey Field. With three road games remaining this weekend, Huntingdon (28-9) closes the regular season with an 18-1 record at home this season.

In Wednesday’s win, Trammell DeJarnett scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the ninth inning to tie the game 7-7 and Caleb Astin drew a bases-loaded walk to score Grant Brown in the bottom of the 10th for the win.

The Hawks, who played a total of 20 players in the game, built a 5-0 lead early before falling behind 7-6 in the eighth inning. In the bottom of the ninth, Cameron Lewis singled with one out and DeJarnett came in to run for Lewis.

Huntingdon baseball completes season sweep of Birmingham-Southern

Keegan Lambeth and Seth Currie drove in five runs and Huntingdon’s pitching and defense took care of the rest as the Hawks beat Birmingham-Southern 5-4 on Tuesday.

The win capped a season-sweep of the Panthers. The Hawks (24-9) beat Birmingham-Southern (25-12) 4-3 and 4-1 earlier this season.

Lambeth smashed a three-run home run in the first inning for a 3-1 lead and Currie hit a two-run single in the sixth for a 5-2 lead. The Panthers rallied with two runs in the seventh inning before closer Neil Lawler took the mound for the final three innings.

Lawler entered the game in the seventh inning with a 5-4 lead, runners on first and second and no outs. The junior worked his way out of the seventh without giving up a run and only allowed one batter to reach base in the eighth.

In the ninth, the Panthers managed a triple with one out.

Huntingdon baseball completes sweep of Covenant

The Huntingdon baseball team swept Covenant 4-3 and 10-4 on Saturday in a pair of seven-inning games. Huntingdon won the first game of the series 6-4 on Friday.

Huntingdon (23-9) carries a seven-game winning streak into Tuesday’s game with 20th-ranked Birmingham-Southern. Game time is set for 6 p.m. at Posey Field.

On Saturday, catcher Joseph Odom finished the day 3-for-6 with a two-run homer, six RBIs and one run. Odom’s home run was his 13th of the season, the most by a Huntingdon player during the NCAA era. Odom, who leads Division III in home runs this season, has 27 career home runs in three seasons.

Caleb Astin was 4-for-7 in the doubleheader with two RBIs and two runs. Trey Smith was 3-for-7 with a RBI and a run and Seth Currie was 3-for-6 with a RBI and two runs.

In Game 1, Covenant (22-10) took a 3-0 lead in the second inning before Huntingdon answered with four runs in the fifth and sixth innings.

Blackwell's 7 RBIs help Hawks complete sweep of Berry

The Huntingdon baseball team got off to a strong start on Sunday. But after scoring seven runs in the first inning, the Hawks had to rally late in the game to beat Berry 15-12.

Trailing 11-10 with the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh, Tyler Blackwell doubled down the left-field line to bring in three runs and give the Hawks a 13-11 lead. The junior first baseman finished the day 4-for-4 with seven RBIs and two runs.

Neil Lawler (2-1) earned the win, pitching the final two innings of the game. Lawler struck out one, walked one, allowed one run and gave up two hits.

With the win, Huntingdon (20-9) completed a three-game sweep of Berry. The Hawks won 11-0 on Friday and 9-1 on Saturday. Early in Sunday’s game, it looked like Huntingdon would again put the Vikings away early.

Huntingdon sent 13 batters to the plate in the first inning and scored seven runs.
